The Koppie
The Koppie is a large, low hill that is relatively untouched by locals, except for a path that is maintained through the grass and pine trees. Part of a national park, the Koppie is a favorite of Hortensia for walking, as she takes daily trips there to take in the beauty of the place, and to clear her mind. Part of the Koppie is granted to the Samsodiens as a land claim reparation at the end of the novel, though much of it still remains open to the public.

Katterijn is an exclusive, wealthy neighborhood in the suburb of Constantia, outside Cape Town. Katterijn owes its history to the Dutch, and its present-day residents are mostly white.
