That night Walter goes home and writes a note to Pesca. On the outside he writes instructions to open the envelope at nine the next morning if Walter does not meet him by then. On the inside he writes: Fosco is a member of the brotherhood who has betrayed his trust. He gives Fosco's address and ends with a note that Walter has risked all and paid for it with his life. He sends the note by messenger and waits for a reply. The moment he gets the reply, he leaves by cab and races to Count Fosco's home.
