Summary
The first person narrator, or the self-declared Woman in the Yellow Cardigan, lives close to the Woman in the Purple Skirt. She "has this name" because she "only ever wears a purple-colored skirt" (1). The Woman in the Purple Skirt is small in stature. The narrator cannot tell how old she is. Her hair is dry and crispy.
Once a week, the Woman in the Purple Skirt buys a cream bun, takes it to the park, and sits on her Exclusively Reserved Seat (2). While watching her eat the bun, the narrator decides she looks like her sister. Her sister was similarly obsessive about food. The narrator has not seen her sister in years.
The biggest difference between the narrator and the Woman in the Purple Skirt is that everyone notices the Woman in the Purple Skirt. Everyone knows how quick and agile she is...
