Summary
While the narrator waited for the woman, she thought about how the woman appeared unhinged and eccentric. While the narrator waited, she made small talk with the woman, asking her about her daughter, and if she has more of her father’s or her mother’s personality. The woman got defensive and told the narrator that her daughter is a “dead spit” (63) of her.
After obtaining the embrocation, the narrator started to return to Jim and the paddock, but she encountered Jo entering the store. His hair was combed, and he had dressed up. When the narrator arrived at the paddock, she jokes with Jim about how Jo seemed enamored with this eccentric woman. The narrator refused to believe that this was the same beautiful woman that Jim had told them about before.
