Summary

Chapter 35 is titled “The Magic Mostly Listens.” Ned screams and the wolf howls mournfully. Aine interrupts. She is holding to some vines and roots, but barely. Aine is crying. She does not want to die. Ned calls on the magic to give him a rope. Ned fights the urge to use the magic for more. The wolf takes the rope across the scree field, dropping it down to Aine while Ned anchors it. Aine is soon safely on solid ground. They are still hugging when a bandit fires an arrow toward Aine.

Chapter 36 is titled “The Execution of Sister Witch.” There have been a lot of delays, but the gallows are finished. Lord Brin says Sister Witch will be hanged the following morning. Sister Witch has seen a lot of people “transition from this world to the next” (261). She knows she may face...
