Point of View
The novel is told in a third-person point-of-view. Very often, the book will convey what is happening by having a character rationalize away reality. Put another way, the novel allows the reader to see around the characters, while still being entrenched in their thoughts. By showing this form of self deception, it demonstrates that characters are working under constant deception, both within themselves and towards others. While hiding in the broom closet at the Knowle, Ned points out that Morvath does not trust him, as evidenced by his sending a spy after them. Cecelia responds with “Does anyone?” (133) and from there Cecelia’s inner monologue takes control. “He did not reply, and Cecelia’s heart unexpectedly cringed with regret at having asked.
