Summary
Chapter 13- Cecelia and Ned prepare a meal together since there are no servants to do it for them. Cecelia is not hungry as she remembers seeing her mother’s death. She complains to Ned about how flat it is in Blackdown Hills, making it a deceptive name. The two stand at the window for a few moments. Cecilia tries distracting herself from yearning thoughts by imagining all the ways she could hurt him. She grows hot and uncomfortable, and Isabelle enters looking like the “merry widow” (152) she is. Isabelle says she thinks Northangerland Abbey must be close, given what Jacobsen told her and the amount of smoke she’s seen out the window. Cecelia suggests they go scouting that evening, and Isabelle disagrees. She also claims she is now responsible for Cecilia. Ned points out that Isabelle hired him to kill...
