Lucy Hart

Lucy Hart is the protagonist of the novel and is the most dynamic character in the novel. As her last name implies, she believes love is the most important thing in a parent-child relationship, and she shows this love to Christopher, a young boy she wants to adopt. Lucy came to her convictions about love when she was a child. Her parents poured all of their love and attention onto Lucy’s older sister, Angie, who was always sick. Because she lacked love as a child, Lucy wants to shower it on Christopher. She wants him to know that he is never alone. She does, in fact, do this, and she develops a close relationship with him after his parents die.

While Lucy is wonderful at making Christopher feel loved, she is not good at the more practical aspects of motherhood. She lives in a disheveled home...
