Part One: Chapters 5-9 Summary

Upon returning from her interview, LuAnn finds Duane in bed with a red-headed woman from town. He doesn't seem the least bit remorseful, and LuAnn recognizes him for the weak man that he is. LuAnn first places Lisa, still in her car seat, on the bathroom floor and closes the door to prevent her from viewing the confrontation. Then she grabs the sleeping woman by the hair and drags her across the room before depositing her, naked, outside. Duane asserts his love for LuAnn, but she is more convinced of her need to leave him. His words of endearment are met with a right punch and kick in the groin. As LuAnn gathers her things she discovers a cache of money beneath the mattress. Duane won't reveal its origins and LuAnn doesn't truly care anyway. Their fight...
