Section 10: Chapters 22-25 Summary
Hock Seng and Mai carefully avoid the white shirts as they cross the city in Chapter 22 with Mai scouting ahead, as Hock Seng tries to convince himself that he will be safe as long as he does not betray himself by speaking. At his house, he gives Mai money and sends her on her way. She is sure that she is safe since she is not a yellow card, but Hock Seng knows "how little anyone cares to separate wheat from chaff, when all anyone wants to do is burn a field" (page 204). In Chapter 23, Carlyle and Anderson discuss their agreement with Akkarat, and Anderson wants to reach out to Akkarat and offer their support, hoping he will heed their offers due to the recent crisis.
