Section 6: Chapters 10-11 Summary
In Chapter 10, Anderson assures Emiko that she is safe after he frightens the man away with his spring pistol, and when he realizes that she is overheating, he drops her into the ocean where she becomes blessedly cool. Emiko is confused that Anderson helped her, but when she offers to allow him to use her, he refuses. In response to his question about where to take her, Emiko admits that Raleigh is the only one who will keep her because she is a novelty, explaining how her prior master left her behind. When she clings to him to avoid being recognized as a windup, Anderson pulls her closer as he wonders if she wants him or just cannot refuse.
