Section 3: Chapters 4-5 Summary
In Chapter 4, Captain Jaidee Rojjanasukchai is focused on protecting the Kingdom from infections of the natural world, though he knows it is like trying to catch the ocean with a net. Surveying the wreckage his men have wrought, he notes that nearly every crate holds something suspicious. He watches Lieutenant Kanya Chirathivat count the bribe, smiling because all of the money is there. Knowing the shipment will be misused, Jaidee orders his men to burn it all. Returning home, Jaidee is confronted by his wife, Chaya, who worries that Jaidee will make important people angry, but he is proud to be a hero to the people and a thorn to the Ministry of Trade. Chaya insists she has already lost too much and cannot bear to lose him too, and she takes him by the hand and leads him...
