Sedatives

The sedatives are atrocities of war. It is because Rachel is so anxious about the war situation that she must have strong sedatives just to do her duties as a wife and mother.

Nazi Banner

The Nazi banner is a symbol of protection. Even though Peter is Aryan, he procures this banner because he wants to appear to be sympathetic to the Nazis. He believes it will keep him from getting hurt or accosted as he looks for Rudolph.

War Medal

The war medal is a symbol of bravery. Volker gives this medal to Samuel just before he leaves for England on the Kindertransport. He says that if Samuel rubs it that it will help him to be brave. Samuel later gives this same medal to Anita with the same instructions that if she rubs it, it will help her to be brave.
