Vienna, Austria is where Samuel lived with his family until he was almost six. At that time, the Nazis attacked the Jews in Austria on Kristallnacht. Samuel was sent to England shortly after to protect him. His mother continued to live in Vienna for several years before she was discovered hiding in a friend’s pharmacy. She was taken to a concentration camp where she later died. Samuel returned to Vienna as an adult. The building where his family lived had been razed and a bank built in its place.

New Orleans

After Samuel graduated from college, he spent ten days in New Orleans to learn about jazz music. During Samuel’s time in New Orleans, he also met his future wife, Nadine. Before he left that city, Samuel begged Nadine to promise that she would marry him.
