Summary

In "Samuel: New Orleans, London, & Berkeley, 1958-1970," Samuel spent ten days in New Orleans to learn all he could about jazz music. In the first bar he visited, he met Nadine LeBlanc, who told him he looked like Humphrey Bogart. Nadine was a member of a rich New Orleans family, but she was determined to be an independent woman. She was the opposite of Samuel, and he was spellbound by her.

When Samuel explained why he was in New Orleans, she told him that she was going to take him to hear the best jazz in the city. Before Samuel left to return to England, Samuel begged her to promise that she would marry him.
