Summary
In "The Adlers: Vienna, November 1938," Rudolph Adler, a Jewish doctor closed his practice early because he was so stressed by the fear of the Nazi regime. A German diplomat had been killed by a Polish Jew. Rudolph feared it would result in more retaliation against all Jews. Rachel, Rudolph’s wife, was so anxious that she required strong sedatives to keep her functioning. Rudolph walked to the pharmacy owned by his non-Jewish friend, Peter Steiner. The two remained friends in spite of the laws that Jews and non-Jews were not to associate.
Meanwhile, Rachel was at the bakery. The baker warned Rachel she needed to get home quickly because of the threats of retaliation. Rachel decided to leave the remainder of her errands for another day. Rachel picked up Samuel, her son, and returned to their apartment which...
