Chapter 9 Summary

In the morning Daja is wakened to the sounds of a man shouting. Briar and Tris both come out as well, and Tris insists the man explain himself. Ambros and his wife are wakened as well as Halmar spouts his indignation. Sandry marches out with Gudruny in tow. Sandry tells Halmar that Gudruny petitioned her for freedoom from him, and she has granted it. After Sandry has him hauled away, Ambros tells her that she should still have him flogged for his disrespect, but Sandry has other ideas. She immediately hires Gudruny as her maid and assigns her children as pages. She asks that a few soldiers be sent to help her pack. Rizu suggests a morning ride and several of the others agree to go. Inside, Sandry tells Daja the story of Gudruny, and then at Daja's suggestion, she leaves to inform...
