Summary
Roz and Brightbill begin hiking through the mountains only stopping occasionally to let Brightbill rest. Roz uses a lighter from her toolbelt to keep them warm and protected at night. While they are happy to be back in the wilderness, both are ready to be home. However, one day when the two are crossing a meadow, they are found by wolves named Shadow and Barb who Roz recognizes from the pack that attacked the farm. Shadow mocks her for not having the rifle and says he heard her story from other animals. He attacks Roz out of revenge as it is implied that he lost his pack after his defeat at Hilltop Farm. Roz and Brightbill escape into a tall tree where Roz remembers the island animal’s reaction to fire. At night, she lights...
