Summary
In Chapter, 8 Perveen rides to Malabar Hill to speak to the widows. After introductions, the widows are surprised that Perveen needs to speak to them alone. Perveen notes that, oddly, Sakina, the second wife, decides to speak to her privately before the first. In Chapter 9 Perveen speaks with Sakina in a rose-colored bedroom. Sakina’s dowry, a set of jewelry, is withdrawn from the wall safe. Perveen needs to see the jewelry exists, and notes that the second wife consents to donating the wealth to the wakf. Perveen explains that the new purpose of the wakf, building a school, differs from helping injured soldiers and will necessitate a legal change. The funds may not support both.
