Elizabeth of York
Elizabeth of York is the main character and narrator of the novel. She is the former lover to the deceased King Richard and is forced to marry Henry to end the cousin’s war. At first, she is very bitter towards Henry and hates that she must marry him. While she is rude to him, she respects their wedding vows and always provides what he needs, albeit unwillingly. As the novel progresses, and she has more children, she grows to love Henry. Elizabeth has a strong sense of justice and often questions Henry’s decisions to the reader. She cares and trusts her people, even in the midst of war.
By the end of the novel, Elizabeth transitions from an hot-headed princess to a humble queen. As she watches Henry fall in love with another women, she realizes the pain she put King Richard’s wife...
