Summary

The narrator recalled when she had been x-rayed in an attempt to figure out the reason why she was in pain. She had been surprised to see that her body contained solid, strong bones. As a child, she had been intrigued when learning the names of the human body’s bones. She thought it was strange that human bodies are made of something besides skin and muscle. She considered that she often forgot that her body, like all human bodies, was a “house of sand” (107). She often had forgotten that “it had shattered and is shattering still” (107). She recalled when one of her bosses used to say that he wanted to see a former lover one day when they would both be old. He wanted to see her when her hair would be white.
