Summary
The narrator began Book 2 by considering the rime on windows. Frequently, she thought about the brevity of life. She saw a butterfly outside and thought about how even the butterfly will soon pass away. Meanwhile, when she gazed upon the tide, she considered how earth will not last forever.
She saw a snowflake on a black coat and considered its intricate details and how short it will last--only a couple seconds--before it will melt. She also thought about how people appreciate the snow during its first fall, but it becomes ordinary and mundane after time. Further, when it is very cold outside, the snow becomes harsh and painful to people. At night, she saw a man alone outside on the snowy ground and thought about how he must perceive the snow as horrible and dirty. She recognized his loneliness.
