Summary
In Chapter 61, the little girl warned Jake he might get into trouble when he started drawing a battle scene instead of trying to copy the intricate drawing as George had instructed him. Jake thought that the difficult picture was a test, the same way the moldy pastries had been a test. When George came upstairs, he was smiling, but Jake thought George’s smile “was all wrong” (320). The smile disappeared when he saw what Jake was drawing. Jake felt tears in his eye when George cursed at him and criticized him for being not trying his best and for being wasteful. George appeared to be trying to compose himself, but Jake sensed that he was looking for a reason to be angry. George told Jake he had to be punished, and Jake backed up against the bed in fear.
