Maddy Washington

Maddy Washington is the protagonist of the novel. She was kept away from all people until she was 12 years old at which time the state forced her into public school. She has a white father and a Black mother, but her father tried to hide her Black roots from everybody so that he and Maddy would not be looked down upon because of her race. Everybody believes she is white until May 1, 2014 when she gets stuck running in the rain, and her hair poofs up, proving to many that she is Black.

Maddy has been made fun of from the beginning in school because she dresses old fashioned and does not fit in with other people.
