Summary
In Chapter 22, Maddy is drenched in paint, and she knows her father will be really angry. She does not realize that Kenny is yelling to her, and he takes her off stage. She feels something crumble inside her. “Her body was morphing to accommodate an erupting savage madness” (335). Kenny brings her outside towards the protestors. She thinks of how Kenny “was supposed to be her Moses” and wonders if there is any hope for her (336). An officer will not let Kenny through to the white prom. The kids start chanting to be let in, and the officers call for backup. The television cameras stop working. Wendy makes it into prom, and Regina accuses Wendy of setting them all up. She knows that no one will ever believe that she is innocent. Outside, a police car floats in the air.
