Summary
Mrs. Foster was desperate. She begged her husband to leave the gift behind so they could start driving, but Mr. Foster insisted on going back to the house to look for the gift. After he left the car, Mrs. Foster noticed the gift forced between the car door and the side of the seat, “as though with the help of a pushing hand” (45). She told the chauffeur to run into the house and call Mr. Foster.
The Chauffeur returned to the car and told Mrs. Foster the door was locked, so Mrs. Foster decided to call her husband herself. She arrived at the front door, slid the key into the lock, and stopped. She heard a peculiar noise from inside the house, which caused her to freeze and listen. After some time paralyzed at the door, Mrs. Foster rushed back to the car...
