Summary
Chapter 58 begins in Adolin's first person narration as he sits with several of his friends from other war camps before his duel later in the day. The conversation irks Adolin a bit as the others insult his father. Adolin finishes his customary cup of yellow wine and heads to the dueling arena. As he does so, he finally realizes why his father is so insistent on following the Codes; it is to give the men commanders they can respect and rely on. The Codes are used to treat war with the gravity it deserves and to not make it a festival like many of the Alethi have done. The narration then moves to Dalinar's first person as he sits with Elhokar and Sadeas as they watch the dueling arena and wait for Adolin's duel to begin. Dalinar tells his two companions a story...
