Summary
Chapter 5 is titled “Rules of Acquisition.” Yehuda ignores everything while following the crow while the land becomes strange. (This is called the Far Country.) He finds an ancient tree with limbs that clack like bones. While he might have believed this to be impossible a few hours earlier, he now accepts it. The landscape changes from forest to fields, to valleys filled with tombstones, always with snow. He has to hide when he encounters a huge army of soldiers. They wear all kinds of uniforms with an array of wounds. He loses track of the crow but finds it by locating the points of light. He finds the crow is landing at the Treasure House of Lord Mammon.
Meanwhile, Bluma keeps throwing the spoon and it always reappears in her pocket. She cuts herself repeatedly. She sees a cat on a tombstone, then...
