Summary
Part II begins with an italicized paragraph by an unnamed writer, thanking the family for opening their home and offering a “cure” (61) to her. In other passages between paragraphs, women recall life on the mainland - specifically the danger of the men there.
The girls watch Mother interact with the men, who are actually two men and one boy, out the window. The men lost their boat, and they seek shelter. They offer to protect the women, but Mother threatens them with a knife, then leaves them on the beach. Later, one man and the boy knock on the door and Lia answers. She lets them in and gives them food. The next day, Mother returns to the beach and tells the men they can come into the house. The men, Llew and James, are brothers, and the child, Gwil, is Llew's son...
