Book 1, Part 2, Chapters 1 - 15 Summary

In this first chapter of Part 2 of the first book the reader is introduced to Roland's boy, Jake. Jake is a student in the affluent Piper School, but he feels he is going crazy. He is hearing voices in his head telling him conflicting stories of his past. He is being told by these voices he was hit by a car and killed. He also has some memory of a way station. In Chapter 2, Jake realizes the Final Essay he has written is nothing but the ranting of a mad person. On his title page, he has pasted a picture of a door and an Amtrak train. In Chapter 3 Jake reads the text of his essay, a collection of riddles and repetitive statements written in poem form. In his fear, Jake asks permission to leave the room...
