Chapters 53-56 and Author's Note Summary
In Chapter Fifty-Three, Dr. John Dee is in a rage because the Book of the Dead spell he had planned on using to awaken the creatures has only been able to turn the creatures to dust. Machiavelli tells Dee is has always been an amateur; Dee finds this humorous because he has a brilliant plan. Machiavelli believes his arrogance will be his downfall. When Dee gives Billy over to be a snack for the Sphinx, Virginia saves him, saying he deserves a more dignified death. She then, to Dee's surprise, begins to awaken the creatures with her flute.
