Part Four, Chapters One through Seven Summary
Tristram is eager to find his wife as Chapter One begins, but he longer wants revenge. The city is chaotic, with drunken people killing and cooking one another in the streets. He approaches a group, and is welcomed when he says he is just out of prison. They say the country is without a government, and Tristram says the Gusphase has not yet begun, which they do not understand. He drinks broth, and says he wants to get to the Northern Province. They say no trains are running, and the countryside is dangerous. He spends the night and in the morning, they give him meat to take on the journey.
