Summary

Stephen was revolted by George’s new intern. Meanwhile, Stephen and Birke worked together to prepare for the Rhine Conference. When Stephen returned to the apartment he shared with Tiffany he told her the people there had paid no attention to him. He believed he represented to the people at the conference the ultimate smartass. He’d come to the conclusion that life needed to be left alone but no one wanted to leave it alone. Tiffany tried to compare his feelings with the story “The Rhime of the Ancient Mariner” but Stephen criticized her. He continued to rage about the conference. It turned out he had also found Birke with Olaf and had become very angry. As a result of his grief Stephen stopped sleeping. When Tiffany begged him to take off a few weeks of work, he quit completely.
