Summary
The stewardess offers her condolences and comforting words to Fenella's grandmother. She offers her some tea, but Mary declines. After the stewardess leaves, Mary begins to undress. Fenella is uncomfortable watching her grandmother, but pays attention to how she removes each element of clothing. Fenella also undresses, and her grandmother reminds her to pray before going to sleep. Mary tells Fenella that she will take the top bunk, and Fenella is confused as to how her grandmother will ascend to the bed: "Three little spider-like steps were all Fenella saw. The old woman gave a small silent laugh before she mounted them nimbly, and she peered over the high bunk at the astonished Fenella" (4). Fenella washes herself and gets into the uncomfortable bed. She can hear her grandmother praying above her.
