Chapter 14 Summary

The next morning, Poulton comes to get Reacher, telling him that Harper is off the case. Reacher finds out Lamarr's stepfather died. She doesn't plan on taking any time off the case. In the cafeteria over breakfast, there is a story in the New York Times about a racket turf war and Petrosian is among the dead. Reacher throws his badge down to the FBI agents and walks out. Harper ends up following Reacher in the car and giving him a ride to the highway so he can hitchhike home. She tells him that Jodie is okay and home now from some work travel.

Reacher hitchhikes back to New York City, which takes him seven hours. When he lets himself into Jodie's apartment, she tells him there is an FBI agent in her kitchen. The agent calls in Alan Deerfield, who shows up and starts questioning Reacher...
