Summary
By Chapter 18, the girls have settled into life at Lady Charlton’s estate and are growing more comfortable in the cottage. Through chatter at the village pub, Emily learns more about the tricky situation the village women have been left in, running their husband’s businesses. Then the land girls are called back, and Emily says farewell to Lady Charlton. They had grown fond of one another, enjoying their evening talks. Emily looks forward to the end of the war, Robbie’s return, and their marriage. But she receives devastating news: he died in a plane crash as a hero, in an effort to save a village. In Chapter 19, Emily grieves for Robbie’s death with the comfort of the other girls. Miss Foster-Blake offers to discharge her early, but Emily insists she would be better off distracting herself with work. The land girls...
