Importance: Aly is working as a news reporter for a TV station in her hometown of Naples, Florida. At this point, she has just brought up that she can reasonably get Meryl Streep to do an interview for the station, and she wants to be the one to do the interview on camera herself. Joyce, her boss, immediately gives the job to a white coworker of Aly's. This quote demonstrates just how much prejudice there is against women who are not incredibly young when it comes to them getting on screen for the public -- Aly is only in her 40s, and she is already seeing her work opportunities dwindle massively.
