Bindu
Bindu is one of three characters in the novel from whose perspective the story is told. She is a woman in her 60s who has just moved into a retirement community called Shady Palms. At this point in her life, she seems to have found great comfort in knowing what exactly she wants out of life -- she is friendly, talkative, and has begun going on lots of dates with men at Shady Palms. She spent a long time married to Rajendra, and by all accounts it sounds like he was a rather repressive husband. He died 22 years ago.
Bindu's son, Ashish, marries Aly; when they divorce, Bindu effectively takes Aly's side and lives with her for awhile after the divorce. She still has a relationship with her son, but has grown closer to Aly partially because Ashish moved back to India after the divorce.
