Summary
In Chapter 18, as Lamentations’ fever worsened, so did “the night visions” (201). At one point, she woke to a wolf. In the morning, she realized that the wolf had passed over her, because she had no fat on her body.
In Chapter 19, Lamentations’ condition worsened. Discovering “soreness around her mouth,” she realized she had smallpox (206). Although still feverish, Lamentations continued forward. She told herself if she kept moving, she might survive. As she walked, her body blazed. Her mind shifted into dreams and memories. Weak and ailing, she fell. After landing, she drifted into sleep.
In Chapter 20, Lamentations studied her new surroundings after waking from her fall. Despite her pain, she told herself “go on, girl” (214). She studied the landscape, afraid to miss such beauty.
Studying the black clouds overhead, Lamentations imagined saw them as angels. Then the angels left and the sky opened...
