The Struggle, Chapters 1-2 Summary
The second book of The Vampire Diaries, The Struggle, begins in the crescendo of Elena's confrontation with Damon, Stefan's vampire brother. Having called to him at the old Fells Church, Damon arrives surrounded by storm and an unnatural snow.
Damon laughs at the human girl who is demanding that he release Stefan. He tells her that Stefan is not the one she should choose; instead, he tries to entrance her. As he uses his magical powers on her, Elena begins to forget her love for Stefan, but as Damon draws in to bite her she touches the two wounds on her neck where Stefan shared blood with her. She repels at Damon and tells him that he can never have her, a fact that Damon finds annoying but also amusing. He retreats and as he does so...
