Summary
In this chapter, Magic Gourd teaches Violet the basics of being a courtesan. In developing Violet’s reputation, Magic Gourd tells her she will learn a larger number of songs and poems than other courtesans. She is to learn to be on her best behavior in public and attentive to men. The first party she will attend is for a rich man named Loyalty Fang.
In dealing with the men, Magic Gourd tells Violet she should seek jewelry, furniture, a contract with a stipend and a retirement, but not love as that emotion doesn’t last.
