Love
The two stories in this series largely focus on Faith’s relationships with Livid, Pallid, and Clifford, demonstrating the difficulty in determining who to love, or what romantic "love" really is. Through Faith’s relationships and interactions with these three characters, Paley explores the tribulations of love. For example, aspects of Livid and Pallid’s personalities seep into Faith’s personality in the first story. Moreover, the vast difference in Livid and Pallid’s personalities highlights the fact that Faith does not know what she is looking for in a romantic relationship.
Livid and Pallid have strongly opposing personalities. Regardless, Faith adapts her personality so that it becomes similar to both of their personalities in some ways.
