Summary
Chapter 12 begins the section titled, “2014.” Julie recalls that John, a partner at her law firm, died from cancer within two months of diagnosis. Julie connected with online communities of people who were also battling cancer. She noticed that a woman named Gloria who was determined to defeat cancer nonetheless died from the disease. Julie felt afraid that someone with so much positivity and determination still could not overcome cancer. She also describes the warlike nature of battling cancer. She contemplates how cancer is a force of nature, comparable to a hurricane.
In Chapter 13, Julie spends time with a couple of her cousins and her sister, Lyna. They enjoy time together without their kids for the first time in many years, and it reminded them of their youth.
