Summary

The novel takes place over the course of seven days at a luxury resort named Broken Point in Big Sur California. The first chapter takes place on Sunday. The narrator left her room at the resort to swim in the pool in the rain at 5 a.m. She did not expect to see anyone else while she was doing this, so she was surprised to find someone else in the pool when she arrived. She quickly realized the man in the pool was fully dressed, face down, and not moving. She jumped into the pool and turned the man over. She was afraid he was dead, but she pulled him out of the pool anyway. She noticed an injury of some kind on the back of his head. He was wearing a suit with a flower in the buttonhole.
