Summary
Chapter 19 opens with Ada knocking on their front door to give Gavin with an envelope. She says that the Dolans bought lottery tickets for themselves and one for Gavin, and that Gavin’s won. The stunned Gavin is relieved when Ada changes the topic, and then he becomes embarrassed, worrying what she knows about how much her brother had to help Pei-Pei when she was hypothermic. He is embarrassed to think that Collin had seen their home. When Ada leaves, he keeps the money, which he doesn’t mention to his mother until the next day.
In the next scene, the mother and three children are at the Anchorage airport, waiting to board a flight to Seattle. The family rents a small two-bedroom apartment with a small yard, and the children go back to school. Pei-Pei takes one bedroom; the mother sleeps in the...
