Chapters 51-52 Summary
In Chapter 51, Neumann and Anna make their way to the Dougherty farm in the darkness, avoiding the main roads. Sean opens the barn for them and they discuss the escape plans. The German spies do not realize Jenny's father, still suffering from the indignity of being beaten by Neumann in front of the entire town, has seen them pass by on the road and then followed, overhearing the entire conversation. Colville has his shotgun and is entering the barn. Jenny has heard her father leave the house and has followed close behind.
Chapter 52 opens with Charlotte Endicott, a Wren listener at her post about one hundred miles north of the Dougherty farm, near the spot the German spies need to be in order to reach their U-boat. Charlotte hears a signal and knows instinctively it is a spy on the coast...
