Chapters 20-24 Summary
In Chapter 20, Vicary is remembering how he damaged his knees in World War I. He was a courier and had just been given some valuable information. He drove fast on his motorcycle, but the motor broke and he had to push it down the road. Shelling began and one hit him, damaging his legs and putting him into the hospital. He had failed his mission and the important papers fell into the wrong hands. Brought back to the present, Vicary is entering the pub across the street from MI5 headquarters. Harry Dalton is there and asks to speak privately to Vicary. The discussion is about Beatrice Pymm and her unusual death.
