The theme of luck is constant throughout the book. From the start, Olive is convinced that her life has been defined by a series of unfortunate events all due to her relentless bad luck. She sees her sister, Ami, as the lucky one: she has a great job, is in love with her fiancé and always wins whatever contest she enters. Despite how many people argue with her concept of luck, Olive remains consistent that her bad luck is unavoidable and that there is nothing she can do to change that.
