Chapters 1 through 7 Summary
In chapter one, Mrs. Emily Pollifax is in the doctor's office and her doctor, a young man, says that she seems depressed. He asks about her interests and she says that she is involved in a great many clubs and activities but seems to lack enthusiasm about any of them. He asks if there is anything she really wants to do and she admits that, as a child, she had intended to become a spy. He laughs at her and does not encourage that avenue, but does tell her that she should find something that interests her and pursue it. The doctor points out that no one can be happy trying to pretend to be someone she is not, and Mrs. Pollifax realizes that she has never been a "sensible person" and so is not happy trying to live the life...
