Israel

Israel is the central location of the book and the one given the most symbolic significance by its author. Both Danny and Amos were Israeli citizens, Amos being born there and Danny emigrating to Palestine after World War Two. Lewis places great emphasis on the way Amos and Danny’s commitment to defending Israel and serving in the Israeli army shaped their lives.

America

Danny and Amos move to various different areas of America at different points in their lives and for different reasons. To begin with, their commitments in Israel always brought them back to their home country but, later in their lives, Danny and Amos relocated to America permanently after Danny’s second marriage. Lewis suggests that the decision to move to America was a key reason for the demise of their collaboration.
